Recognized since 1936, the Pommard appellation covers part of the commune of the same name. Located in the Côte de Beaune vineyards, it produces wines exclusively from the Pinot Noir grape variety. A well-known appellation in the Burgundy wine world, it is also one of the most prestigious, even if it does not include any Grands Crus. Spread over 320 hectares, the diversity of the terroir gives rise to a wide range of wines throughout the region.

A historic vineyard with a rich terroir

The presence of vines in the Pommard appellation area dates back to ancient times. However, it wasn’t until the Middle Ages that its development became significant. The progressive establishment of Christianity in the region led to the creation of large estates attached to Christian abbeys. The kings of France played a major role in the history of Burgundy’s vineyards, and in particular that of Pommard. One has banned the cultivation of certain grape varieties in order to concentrate efforts on growing Pinot Noir to get the best out of it, while the other has limited yields to encourage concentration. The revocation of the Edict of Nantes marked the beginning of the expansion of Pommard wine abroad. Protestants from the region, forced to emigrate at the time, brought this wine back to their homeland, largely contributing to its fame and reputation. Today, this 700-hectare vineyard has only 320 hectares, due to the phylloxera epidemic that destroyed French vineyards in the 19th century. Planted on the two slopes of a hillock, the vines enjoy a steep incline that provides ideal sunshine. Because of its vertical extension, the vineyard is made up of a wide variety of terroirs. This is reflected in his wines. The wines of the north are fine and elegant, while those of the south are harder and more rustic.

Pinot noir, the king of grapes

Since the edict of Philippe Le Hardi in 1395, production in the Pommard appellation has been limited to the use of Pinot Noir alone. This is a light, acidic red variety with pronounced fruity notes. Its aromatic palette is very broad, with a variety of flavors including black fruits such as cherry, blackberry, blackcurrant and blueberry, as well as floral notes with hints of rose and violet. Finally, the best Pinot Noirs reveal tertiary notes of licorice, pepper, leather and undergrowth. Its location on marl and limestone soils has something to do with it. The nutritional poverty of these soils forces the vine to draw its nutrients from deep within the soil, where they are richer. Pommard wines can be drunk young, though firm and tannic, but they are also wines that can be aged, which will only make them better.

Le Pommard 2016

In the opinion of leading tasters such as Robert Parker, the 2016 vintage of the Pommard appellation is a good vintage that can be kept for between 5 and 25 years before drinking – excellent ageing potential!
