Sancerre, a Loire wine

The town of Sancerre is located in the Cher department (Centre-Val de Loire) on the left bank of the Loire, on a hillock. It is the source of the Sancerre Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée, which produces red, rosé and white wines. The AOC was decreed in 1936 for white wines, and in 1956 for red and rosé wines.

The vineyard covers 3,000 hectares and fourteen communes. The Sancerre terroir is composed of a temperate oceanic climate and three types of soil: marls Kimmeridgiandry, highly stony limestones (caillottes), flint-rich siliceous soils.

Sancerre white grape varieties

Let’s be concise. AOC Sancerre blanc is made exclusively from Sauvignon B grapes.

White Sancerre and gastronomy

White Sancerre goes perfectly with goat’s cheese, especially crottin de Chavignol, part of the AOC area. We can also pair it with fish, shellfish and crustaceans. Finally, warm, slightly spicy appetizers will sublimate a white Sancerre from a good vintage that has aged well.
