Appellation communale de mâcon-villages

Viré-Clessé is an AOC covering the communes of Clessé, Montbellet and Viré in the canton of Lugny and Laizé in Saône-et-Loire, in the Burgundy vineyards.

In the classification of Burgundy vineyard AOCs,AOC Viré-Clessé ranks among the communal appellations, behind the “Premier Cru” and “1er Cru” appellations. AOC Viré-Clessé is the first communal AOC made from mâcon-villages.

Producing only white wines from 100% Chardonnay vines, the Viré-Clessé appellation covers some 390 hectares of clay-limestone soils, with a temperate oceanic climate with continental trends.

Tasting and gastronomy

Viré-Clessé wines are pale gold in color, with slightly green highlights. The nose reveals floral aromas (acacia, honeysuckle, broom…), lemongrass, white peach and menthol notes. Pine, jam and quince can also be detected on certain vintages.

On the palate, the wines of this appellation stand out for their freshness and nervousness, perfectly balanced by a charming roundness.

The characteristics of Viré-Clessé wines give Chardonnay the honor of being able to express itself fully and unhindered.

At the table, these wines are ideal with frogs’ legs, snails, andouillette in white wine or Bresse poultry in cream sauce. A pairing with a goat’s cheese would also be an excellent way to round off the meal.
