Château Haut-Brion is the most famous wine estate in the Graves region. It is located in the pessac-léognanin the communes of Pessac and Talence, in the Bordeaux area. It produces one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious wines, bearing the same name.

 

Château Haut-Brion is a “premier grand cru classé” according to the 1855 Bordeaux wine classification. It shares this rare distinction with the
Château Margaux
and
Château Latour
and
Château Mouton Rothschild
and
Château Lafite Rothschild
. Château Haut-Brion is also classified as a Cru Classé des Graves in the 1959 classification.

The terroir

The Château Haut-Brion vineyard is located in the commune of Pessac and covers 51 hectares. 48 are planted with red grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The other 3 are planted with white Sémillon and Sauvignon vines. The gravelly soil is made up of small pebbles that are all varieties of quartz. The subsoil is composed of a unique blend of sand, clay, limestone and falun (shell limestone).

Château Haut-Brion white

It differs markedly from other dry white Bordeaux wines. Rare, it is distinguished by its aromatic richness, combining the unctuosity, smoothness and apparent sweetness of Semillon with the fruit and freshness of ripe Sauvignon. The latter concentrates typical gravelly flavors. The palate is full-bodied and long.

 

Château Haut-Brion red

It was the first Grand Cru Classé in 1855 and also Cru Classé de Graves in 1959. Château Haut-Brion’s red wine is complex and elegant. It is composed of 45% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 9% Cabernet Franc. A hint of Petit Verdot enriches the blend. Very mineral, its aromas of black fruit, Havana, chocolate and cedar wood gradually reveal themselves. It has a soft opening and a powerful finish.

 

Le Clarence de Haut-Brion

The blend of Clarence de Haut-Brion is 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. This red wine has a nose of tobacco and black fruit. It is harmonious and distinguished. Its fair value is best appreciated after at least 5 years; it is even more qualitative after 10 years.

 

La Clarté de Haut-Brion

La Clarté de haut-Brion is a white wine made from 90% Semillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. It is distinguished by fruity and floral aromas of exceptional freshness and unique complexity.

Each year, 200,000 bottles are produced and sold.
