Several different traditional Chinese dimsum dumplings in a wooden basket cooked for guests on a wooden table in a restaurant.

Introduction

The Chinese New Year’s Eve feast is one of the most important family occasions of the year. It’s not just about enjoying a sumptuous meal, but also about sharing traditions and cultural moments that transcend generations.

Meals typically include cold salads, braised meats, roast duck, steamed fish, soup, fried vegetables and ravioli. The meal doesn’t begin until the glasses are raised and the vows are shared.

Whether you’re having a traditional feast or grabbing takeaway, here are our top recommendations for wine pairings.

Wines to consider

  • Riesling (dry)
  • Gewürztraminer
  • Champagne
  • Pinot Noir
  • Gamay

Authentic feasts are not served in courses. Instead, numerous dishes are served simultaneously, each containing different ingredients and flavors. So it’s best to choose wines that can be paired with a wide range of dishes.

Le
champagne
is an excellent choice for its palate-cleansing nature. It’s also the perfect accompaniment to dim sum and ravioli if you’re ordering takeaway. Our recommendation: Champagne Duval-Leroy Extra Brut Prestige 1er Cru.

Aromatic whites with a little residual sugar(Riesling and Gewürztraminer) go well with fish and dishes with strong spicy aromas. Dry Riesling is an excellent pairing with chow mien to go. Our recommendation: Scheidecker et Fils Riesling Grand Cru Sporen 2019.

Fruity reds, such as pinot noir and gamay, go well with braised meats, especially if prepared with marinades containing sweet soy sauce. Both wines go well with duck dishes. Our recommendation: Maison Piron Morgon les Charmes 2020.

Tannic reds and acidic wines are not recommended.
