Pouilly-Fumé AOC
Pouilly-Fumé is an appellation d’origine contrôlée white wine produced around the town of Pouilly-sur-Loire, in the vineyards of the Loire Valley. This AOC has been recognized since 1937.
To the west of the Loire, the vineyards lie at the crossroads of four major types of soil: siliceous clay, Kimmeridgian marl, hard limestone and flinty clay. The terrain is gently undulating and the climate is continental, temperate oceanic.
Pouilly-Fumé is made exclusively from single-varietal Sauvignon Blanc.
Pouilly-Fumé should not be confused with Pouilly-Fuissé, a Burgundy appellation (in the Mâcon region) made from Chardonnay grapes.
Pouilly-Fumé pairings
Pouilly-Fumé is a dry white wine generally drunk young and cool (around 10°C). The bouquet is quite vegetal and mineral, often described as flinty/flinty. Citrus aromas and menthol notes are also present.
A good match for seafood and smoked or sauced fish, Pouilly-Fumé is also often paired with white meats such as roast poultry or poultry à la crème. Of course, it can also be enjoyed as an aperitif or on a goat’s cheese platter.
