Today, on November 7, the world turns its attention to one grape variety in particular that has conquered the palates of wine lovers the world over: Merlot.

International Merlot Day is the perfect occasion to celebrate this grape variety, which has played a major role in the global wine industry. Originally from the Bordeaux region of France, Merlot has become one of the world’s most popular and widely grown grape varieties.

Origins

The name “Merlot” is derived from the French word “merle”, in reference to the dark color of Merlot grapes, similar to the dark hue of the bird’s plumage. The origins of Merlot go back several centuries, but it is difficult to pinpoint a precise date for its creation.

Production regions

Merlot is often considered one of Bordeaux’s main noble grape varieties, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It has been cultivated in the Bordeaux region for generations and is an essential component of the famous Bordeaux wines, particularly those of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.

Over time, Merlot has also been planted in other wine-growing regions around the world, including the USA, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Chile, South Africa and many others. Its worldwide popularity is a reflection of its intrinsic qualities, notably its ability to produce fruity, fleshy, well-balanced red wines.

Type of wine

Renowned for its versatility, Merlot produces velvety red wines, characterized by subtle aromas of red fruits, plums and lightly spicy notes. Its silky mouthfeel and smooth tannins have made it a favorite among wine novices and connoisseurs alike. It is also often used in blends with other grape varieties, bringing its sweetness and balance to the mix.

Food and wine pairing :

1 – Duck-based dishes, whether roast duck, duck breast or duck confit, are classic choices to accompany a Merlot. The richness of the duck meat blends harmoniously with the aromas and texture of the wine.

2 – Mediterranean cuisine: Mediterranean dishes such as ratatouille, moussaka or pizza are interesting options. Merlot complements the flavors of Mediterranean herbs and vegetables.

3 – Mushroom-based dishes, such as mushroom risottos or sautéed mushrooms, go well with Merlot because of its sweetness, which balances the richness of the mushrooms.

4 – Certain Asian dishes, particularly those based on Peking duck, sweet-and-sour pork or grilled salmon, can go well with a Merlot.
