Le Loupiac

Loupiac is a French appellation d’origine contrôlée wine from the Bordeaux vineyards. Located in the commune of Loupiac within the Entre-deux-Mers production area, Loupiac produces only sweet white wines (like the Cadillac and Sante-croix-du-mont appellations in the same region).

Located on the right bank of the Garonne, this AOC produces “right-bank sweet” wines, as opposed to Sauternes and Barsac, which are produced on the left bank. The vineyards are planted on clay-limestone slopes, sheltered from the north wind. The terroir benefits from the microclimate created by the confluence of the cool waters of the Ciron and the calmer Garonne rivers. This climate favors the development of noble rot, botrytis.

Unsurprisingly, the grape varieties are Semillon (80% of the composition), Sauvignon and Muscadelle. Sémillon brings fatness and strength to the wines, while Sauvignon adds an aromatic touch, and Muscadelle completes the blend.

The foie gras/Loupiac agreement

Foie gras is, as its name suggests, a very fatty food that can be paired with either a dry white wine for contrast, a red wine aged for several decades to match the tertiary aromas and melted tannins, or a sweet white to keep the sweetness and fatness very present.

Foie gras can be eaten raw, semi-cooked, cooked, pan-fried, in terrine… Depending on the preparation, it can be paired with different wines to achieve the perfect match. Foie gras is generally served with a sweet white wine when raw or semi-cooked.

Loupiac is generally paired with foie gras when the latter is raw or semi-cooked (in terrine or not).
