Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, a commune and appellation on Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits, Domaine Jean-Philippe Marchand cultivates vines in Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-St-Denis. The range is rounded out by the purchase of grapes to produce Côte de Beaune appellations such as Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-lès-Beaune. Jean-Philippe Marchand continues a family history that began over a hundred years ago.

Family roots in the Côte de Nuits

The Jean-Philippe Marchand estate is historically linked to the Côte de Nuits, that famous stretch of Burgundy vineyards that has seen a succession of prestigious names turn the heads of lovers of great red wines made from the king of grapes, pinot noir, all over the world. Founded in 1813 following the marriage of Pierre Marchand, a winegrower, and Marie Jacotier, heiress to a vineyard on her father’s side, the domaine was established in Morey-St-Denis and, from generation to generation, seven in all, the tradition has been perpetuated. In 1983, Claude Marchand acquired an 18th-century winegrower’s house in Gevrey-Chambertin, a neighboring commune of Morey-St-Denis, and installed a new winery. He passed on the reins of the estate to his son Jean-Philippe, who continues to run it to this day, with undiminished success.

An estate like an ode to pinot noir

The Côte de Nuits, which stretches from just outside Dijon to just south of Nuits-St-Georges in the Côte d’Or department, is an incredibly rich clay-limestone terroir. Pinot noir, grown as a single grape variety, finds its cradle here and an unrivalled diversity of expression. Domaine Marchand’s vines are naturally planted with Pinot Noir. On average, they are 40 years old, and in the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru appellation, they can be as old as 60. In line with Burgundy practice, the domaine has opted for lower yields, a consequence of the age of the vines, in favor of greater concentration and quality. The vines are grown using integrated farming methods.

Prestigious wines

The wines of the Côte de Nuits enjoy a more than flattering reputation, and Jean-Philippe Marchand makes it a point of honor to live up to it. As a Grand Cru, the highest and rarest level of appellation in Burgundy, the domaine produces a Charmes-Chambertin full of black fruit and spice aromas. The tannins are present, but not aggressive, offering both length and deliciousness to this exceptional wine. Still in Gevrey-Chambertin, the “Les Cazetiers” climat, classified as a premier cru, is also on a par with the summits. Ruby color, red fruit aromas, silky texture and powerful expression, nothing is missing. In Nuits-Saint-Georges, the domaine operates a parcel in the “Les Herbues” climat, in the local appellation. Aged in barrels, the wine combines cocoa and black fruit aromas. Ageing potential is 4 to 7 years. We should also mention Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. From this highly sought-after regional appellation, Jean-Philippe Marchand makes a generous wine with aromas of blackcurrant buds and cherries. A real treat.
