Côtes de Gascogne is one of the South-West region’s wine appellations. Produced between the Gers, Lot-et-Garonne and Landes regions, this appellation is firmly rooted in the local terroir and the Armagnac region. The composition of this vineyard is vast, with most of the white wine being dry, although there are also a few sweet wines. Red and rosé wines are also available. Certified IGP in 2009, Côtes-de-Gascogne white wines are among the most exported in the world, with over 70% of production exported abroad.

Côtes-de-Gascogne, a wine from the land of Armagnac

The name ” Vin de pays des Côtes de Gascogne ” was created in 1974 in the Gers department. In 2004, this appellation will be extended to the entire Armagnac production zone. The production of these vins de pays is highly regulated, with production conditions set by decree in 1982 for the department of Gers. Following a thorough restructuring of the vineyards, these wines were awarded the appellation “Vin de Pays Côtes de Gascogne” in 1982. Certified IGP in 2009, Côtes de Gascogne vins de pays must now comply with very precise, well-defined specifications.

These wines are highly internationalized, with exports to Belgium, Germany to Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are evidence of the recognition of this appellation throughout Northern Europe. It’s its fresh, fruity character that attracts our European neighbors.

A reflection of the richness of Gascony’s soils

Planted on 3 main soil types, Côtes de Gascogne wines are unique. The sandy soils of Bas-Armagnac account for more than two-thirds of the plantings, giving expressiveness and balance to the white wines. In the heart of the Côtes de Gascogne, the limestone soils of the Condomois and Ténarèze regions are ideal for making red wine. Finally, the soils of Haut Armagnac, which tend to be clay-limestone, give a similar character to the wines produced in Ténarèze.

The region’s almost Mediterranean climate is due to the regular winds that soften the oceanic coastal climate inland. This climate, mild in winter and dry in summer, allows the development of a very well-balanced wine.

Côtes-de-Gascogne is a fruity wine

Many grape varieties are used for white wines. These include Colombard, Gros and Petit Manseng and Ugni Blanc, an Armagnac grape combined with Sauvignon and Chardonnay. For reds and rosés, the list is long, with a preference for Tannat, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec, as well as varieties such as Manseng Noir and Syrah.

Dry white wines are renowned for their pale yellow color and greenish highlights. Olfactory expression is particularly aromatic, with a scent of “English candy” (Colombard primeur). Their fruity aromas of white-fleshed fruits and even exotic fruits are also characteristic. On the palate, the fruity dimension of the grape varieties is complemented by a liveliness that lends acidity to the whole. This is often compensated for by blending with rounder, less perfumed varieties such as Sauvignon or Ugni Blanc.

The sweet white is identifiable by its pinkish color, which suggests a perfect cloud of sweetness, blending citrus and exotic fruit. On the palate, its succulent character and slightly unctuous texture give it all its smoothness. The ageing potential of these wines fluctuates between 4 and 5 years.

Its violet hues and deep red color give Gascony red wines a dark edge. The nose reveals notes of redcurrant and raspberry, with occasional hints of licorice and spices. In a second phase, supple tannins appear. Ageing potential is between 4 and 5 years.

The rosé, recognizable by its purple hue, opens with aromas of red fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied but frank. This rosé is best enjoyed chilled at a temperature of around 9°C.

Côtes-de-Gascogne goes well with many regional dishes

Dry whites blend perfectly with appetizers, seafood, fish and white meats. If you’re a fan of Japanese cuisine, you can also enjoy these wines with sushi and maki.

Mellow whites are perfect with foie gras, aperitif toasts and strong cheeses such as blue or goat. For a touch of sweetness, you can enjoy them with your desserts, preferring fruit.

Red goes perfectly with regional products and dishes. It will sublimate Landes products as well as traditional South-West dishes such as the mythical cassoulet.

How to enjoy a rosé Gascony wine? As an aperitif, enjoy its freshness with charcuterie, mixed salads or grilled meats. Enjoy this wine in the warmth of the Landes summers.

An ambitious wine and a fine reflection of the South-West.

To this day, 2005 remains recognized as the vintage of the century for Côtes de Gascogne wines. The year 2000 is also described as exceptional. The years 1982, 1989, 1990, 1995 and 1998 are recognized as years of great vintages. White wines from 1988, 1990 and 2005 are among the exceptional vintages, while 1983, 1985 and 1989 are among the excellent vintages. Rosé enjoyed its heyday in 2000. However, 1982, 1989, 1990, 1995 and 1998 are still great vintages.
