A pioneering vineyard

The history of Château Tour Calon dates back to the 18th century. Located in the Libournais region north of Montagne, the estate produces AOC Puisseguin, Montagne Saint-Emilion, Pomerol and Crémant de Bordeaux.

The house’s particularity: the “prise de mousse” of Libourne wines, introduced by its founder Jean Lateyron, Abel by habitual name. A true avant-gardist and creator, he foams and ages his wines in the dark at Saint-Georges, while producing red Bordeaux wines. In 1897, he set up his own trading company.

His son Paul moves to Montagne. With a better grasp of the Champagne technique of setting foam, he built very large underground galleries to serve as the property’s winery, and linked two quarries thanks to Simeon Lacour in 1927. Paul became mayor of Montagne and was president of the winegrowers’ association for almost 30 years, during which time he developed the community’s activities, including the creation of the Lycée Viticole and his own vineyard.

Since 2009, the estate has been run by Corinne Lateyron, an oenologist by training, and her brother Lionel, who is responsible for marketing the wines, representing the fourth generation of winegrowers on the estate.

In order to expand its capabilities, the Lateyron family’s sparkling wine cellar was certified by Ecocert in 1993 for its organic farming services, and the vineyards of the 3 AOCs were converted to organic farming in 2010.

The numerous awards attributed to the Château’s cuvées testify to their admirable quality and crown the fruit of rigorous work.

AOC Puisseguin Saint-Emilion

Château la Rose de Haut Mouschet is composed of Merlot (60%), Cabernet Sauvignon (40%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The 2015 vintage, an exceptional year, allowed the full power of this cuvée to be expressed, resulting in intense aromas of raspberry, blackcurrant and vanilla. Tight, silky structure on the palate, with a long, fruity finish.

AOC Montagne Saint-Emilion

Château Tour Calon 2016 is made from vines that are partially over 40 years old. Made from Merlot (80%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) and Cabernet-Franc (15%), then barrel-aged, this is a complex wine with aromas of ripe Morello cherry, rose, vanilla and cocoa. Full-bodied and aromatic on the palate. A wine for laying down is now blossoming.

Château Tour Calon Premiers des Tours 2015, made from the estate’s oldest vines, is composed of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Cabernet-Franc. Aged entirely in barrel, it reveals mentholated, woody, red fruit, spice and dried fruit notes. Well-balanced, dense and fleshy on the palate. Powerful tannins accentuated by superb length.

In its desire to push the expression of its terroir even further, the estate has introduced its first nature wine 2018, which will be certified “vin méthode nature” from 2019. The grapes ferment naturally, with no inputs, and undergo neither thermovinification nor filtration.

The domaine has chosen the old Merlot vines planted by Paul Lateyron on the Montagne plateau and added a third of Malbec (from a massal selection) to bring a certain complexity. The result is a wine expressing ripe red fruit, with a full, fleshy mouthfeel and good density. The tannins are smooth and the finish long and particularly aromatic. To preserve the purity of the fruit, the wine is not aged in barrels. Made for ageing, it can be cellared for a long time.

AOC Pomerol

Château Bonalgue Bel Air is 100% Merlot from a single plot. The 35-year-old vines produce grapes that ripen very early, giving the wine a singular roundness combined with powerful aromas. Aged exclusively in new barrels, this wine has great ageing potential and will fully express its aromas over time.

Bordeaux sparkling wines

Lateyron Crémant brut is 70% Semillon and 30% Cabernet franc. Splendid floral and fruity notes with a typical Bordeaux aroma. The mousse is intense, the attack frank and rounded off by a long finish. The wine is aged for a minimum of 16 months on lees, giving it finesse, aromatic freshness, balance and smoothness.

The rosé version of Crémant brut Lateyron, made from Cabernet franc, expresses intense red fruit. The attack is supple and fresh, the mid-palate more expressive and fleshy, and the finish is enhanced by a delicately persistent effervescence.

The Paulian Crémant brut cuvée, composed of 60% Semillon and 40% Cabernet Franc, boasts fine, complex aromas. Aged on lees for a minimum of 24 months, it reveals floral notes of hawthorn and lime blossom combined with aromas of redcurrant and white peach, as well as a fresh, full mouthfeel. A balanced blend of finesse and fullness for an airy, floral finish. A wine of complexity, fleshiness and vinosity.

Abel, the Crémant brut nature, is made with 80% Sémillon Vieilles Vignes and Cabernet franc. The pressing juices are meticulously selected, part of which is vinified in barrels, and the wine aged in the cellar for a minimum of 5 years. The result is complex aromas of roasted almonds, lime blossom and vanilla. Fresh, round and light on the palate, with floral and mineral notes, the bubbles are elegantly delicate and melt-in-the-mouth. When the year lends itself to it, crémant is vintage.
