Owned by the Gasparoux family since 1934, Château Ferrand covers 16 hectares. Most of the vines (12 hectares) are located on the southern slopes of the Pomerol plateau, while the rest, planted around the Pomerol church in the 1970s, are used to produce their second cuvée, Château Haut-Ferrand.

Terroir

AOC Pomerol lies on a plateau above a tributary of the Dordogne, the Isle, in the Libourne region.

Spread over some 800 hectares, the soil of this appellation is composed of what is known as “iron dross”. This name refers to a type of soil made up largely of clay, found in Pétrus in particular, which gives Pomerol wines their extraordinary aromatic depth and delicious notes of truffle and humus that are revealed over the years! Merlot, which is omnipresent in this region of Bordeaux, appreciates cool soils such as clay, which slows down ripening and helps it gain in finesse and complexity!

Working philosophy

Château Ferrand wines are produced with the greatest respect for the traditions to which the Gasparoux family is attached. However, this does not prevent him from using modern techniques and equipment of proven effectiveness to offer precise wines that are totally in line with the times!

Wines

The “Château Ferrand” cuvée, from the southern slopes of the appellation, is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, one-third of which are renewed each year. The significant use of Cabernet Franc, around 40%, contributes to the floral and fruity character of its bouquet. Supple on the attack, this is a well-structured wine with a pleasant, delicate finish.

The vines for the “Château Haut-Ferrand” cuvée are located on the finest terroirs in the appellation, and receive the utmost care and attention. Aged 18 months in oak barrels, one-third of which are renewed each year, this wine is mellow and round, with a discreet bouquet of ripe fruit and venison, giving it the elegance and harmony of the great Pomerols.
