Founded by the Merman family in the early 19th century, Château Le Crock is located in Saint Estèphe. The Cuvelier family, experienced in trading in Northern France, bought it in 1903. The estate became a Cru Bourgeois in 1932, and was then headed by Didier Cuvelier, who has led it to prosperity since 1979. His wines regularly win high marks from Parker, Wine Spectator and Bettane et Dessauve. Round, powerful and with a pleasant finesse, the wines are simply excellent. In order to produce the most respectful product of the Saint-Estèphe terroir, Château Le Crock uses natural techniques to care for the vines.

What is the history of the Cuvelier family?

DC: The Cuvelier family were major wine merchants in Lille, and to celebrate their centenary they decided to buy properties in the Médoc: in 1903 Château Le Crock in Saint Estèphe, and in 1920 Châteaux Moulin Riche and Léoville Poyferré in Saint Julien. The whole family has migrated to Bordeaux, as has the business, which is run by
by Olivier Cuvelier and properties by Didier Cuvelier.

How would you describe your wines in 3 words?

Powerful, well-balanced, with supple, unaggressive tannins.

Who do you make your wines for?

For people who “Crock” life to the hilt!

Who would you like to share a bottle of wine with?

With all true wine lovers.

Do you have an anecdote to share?

Ten years before the famous 1855 classification, Château Le Crock was ranked 5th Cru classé in the pre-classification survey. The story goes that the previous owner was a member of the classification commission and didn’t want to push his cru any further. What a shame when you see where the Crock vineyards are located. The Merlots are bonded to Château Cos d’Estournel, and the Cabernet Sauvignons to Château Montrose, the two stars of the appellation.

What would be the perfect Christmas wine pairing for your Château Le Crock?

A perfect match for turkey with chestnuts!
