Located in the heart of the Pyrenean Piedmont in southwestern France, Château Montus, along with Château Bouscassé, is part of the Brumont vineyards. His estate spans the Madiran, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and Côtes de Gascogne appellations, and Alain Brumont’s innovative viticultural methods ensure that his wines reflect their terroir, being rich, elegant and fresh.

Alain Brumont, winegrower of genius

Alain Brumont’s adventure in the South-West vineyards began in the 1980s. A year earlier, he inherited Château Bouscassé, and the following year acquired Château Montus to promote the tannat grape variety, which he believes has the potential to produce great wines. The Montus Prestige cuvée was born in 1985. This wine is made from 100% tannat and aged in new barrels. From the very first vintage, it was a resounding success. Top international tasters recognize it as a great wine, allowing the Madiran appellation to regain its rightful place among the finest AOCs. Over the years, Alain Brumont acquired more land and created new cuvées such as Montus La Tyre. In 1991, he was named Best Winemaker of the 80s by Gault-Millau magazine for his high-quality wines and innovative viticulture and winemaking methods. Today, he continues his quest for excellence.

A unique terroir

Château Montus is ideally situated on one of France’s finest vineyard terroirs. Its location in the Pyrenean Piedmont offers an idyllic setting halfway between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and not far from the Pyrenees. The estate benefits from both maritime and mountain influences, tempering the region’s hot climate. The clay-limestone soils, covered with rounded pebbles that store heat, release it during the night, limiting the temperature range and lengthening the vegetative cycle for optimal berry ripening. Last but not least, vines planted on steep slopes benefit from a southern exposure, ideal for sunny planting. Alain Brumont implements cultivation practices designed to preserve his vines and their environment from harmful elements that could disrupt their development: use of spring water, preservation of biodiversity, special attention to each bunch of grapes… This is what makes the house so rich.

Varied and tasty wines

Château Montus offers five red wine cuvées and one white wine cuvée: a dry Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh. This one is long and fresh on the palate, with just the right amount of melting, floral and fruity notes. Some iodine and woody notes are also present. The company’s red wines, for their part, are more marked by richness and opulence, thanks to their generous texture and deep character. Mellow tannins reveal notes of red and black fruit, often complemented by tertiary aromas of cocoa, cigar and oak. A treat for every taste bud!
