Vineyard in Canterbury, New Zealand

Recommended by Jancis Robinson, Wine Spectator and Vinous wine ratings,
Greywacke estate
is an area of great renown in New Zealand and internationally. Kevin Judd is one of the region’s pioneering oenologists. In 2009, he set up his own estate, and the success was immediate.

The vineyard

Located in Marlborough, this region is renowned for its cool, dry climate and rich silt and clay soils, making it an ideal terroir for the production of quality wines.

The Greywacke estate covers 50 hectares, mainly devoted to the production of Sauvignon Blanc, the region’s emblematic grape variety. However, the vineyard also produces Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir.
Chardonnay
and Riesling.

Marlborough’s cool, dry climate results in elegant, expressive wines with intense aromas of tropical fruit, grapefruit and lime. Domaine Greywacke wines are renowned for their finesse, balance and long finish.

A lasting commitment

The latter is certified organic and complies with sustainability standards for viticulture and wine production. Similarly, the estate’s cellar is equipped with the latest technology to guarantee wine quality and preserve the unique characteristics of the terroir. Finally, world-renowned viticulture and winemaking expert Kevin Judd discusses an ecological approach to wine production, using sustainable methods and minimizing the use of chemicals.

Emblematic vintages

  • Wild Sauvignon : This is the estate’s flagship cuvée. This cuvée is a “wild”, unfiltered Sauvignon Blanc produced from grapes grown using biodynamic methods. The grapes are fermented with natural yeasts present on the grape skins and in the cellar, giving the wine a unique aromatic complexity. The wine is aged on fine lees for 11 months, giving it a creamy texture and remarkable length on the palate. The critics love it… maybe you do too?

  • Pinot Noir : This cuvée is made from the Pinot Noir grape variety, which is increasingly cultivated in the Marlborough region. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in French oak barrels for around 15 months. The wine is elegant and aromatic, with notes of cherry, raspberry and spice.

  • Chardonnay : This cuvée is produced from Chardonnay grapes grown on low-yield clay and loam soils. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in French oak barrels for around 18 months. The wine is complex and balanced, with aromas of yellow fruit, vanilla and hazelnut. Atypical and comforting!

  • Riesling : This cuvée is made from Riesling grapes grown on limestone-rich soils. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged on fine lees for around 6 months. The wine is fresh and aromatic, with notes of peach, apricot and lime.

All in all, the Greywacke estate is a little nugget straight out of New Zealand. And the different cuvées on offer are well worth the detour!
