Located to the north of the Costières de Nîmes appellation, towards the Pont du Gard, Domaine Poulvarel was created in 2004, when Elisabeth and Pascal Glas took over land that had been in the family for three generations.
Terroir
Domaine Poulvarel covers two appellations.
The Costières de Nîmes AOC is characterized by a soil typical of the southern Rhône Valley: the alluvial soil allows the vines to draw water from the deeper clay layers, bringing freshness to the vines and therefore to the wines. The presence of pebbles on the surface allows heat to be stored during the day and redistributed at night, boosting ripening and grape concentration.
The Coteaux du Pont du Gard PGI, located around the historic site of the Pont du Gard, a Roman monument dating back to the 1st century AD, benefits from a great diversity of limestone and clay, giving the wines a real identity!
Both appellations enjoy a warm, dry Mediterranean climate, cooled from time to time by maritime influences.
Working philosophy
Respecting the terroir, vinifying and ageing on the estate and meeting end consumers directly are important values for Pascal and Elisabeth, who have been independent winegrowers since the estate was founded.
This respect for the product and the craft is also reflected in the special attention they pay to their vines and the environment: since 2014, the estate has been certified High Environmental Value.
Finally, through Elisabeth, the domaine is committed to promoting women in the winegrowing profession through its involvement in the Femmes Vignes Rhône association.
Wines
The Domaine Poulvarel catalog is structured around three ranges: Bouquets, Domaines and Terroirs.
The Bouquets range, in IGP Point du Gard, offers delicate fragrances and subtle aromas by exploiting the best of each grape variety: a blend of white grenache, sauvignon, chardonnay, viognier and muscat for the white, grenache, syrah, cabernet-sauvignon, merlot and mourvèdre for the rosé and grenache, syrah, merlot, marselan and cabernet-sauvignon for the red.
The Domaines range, in AOC Costières de Nîmes, has a strong regional identity, with a fine balance between power and delicacy, based on the classic grape varieties of the Southern Rhône: grenache blanc and roussanne for the white, grenache and mourvèdre for the rosé and grenache and syrah for the red.
The Terroirs range comes from the estate’s best plots. True signatures, these wines reflect the particularity of the terroir, and each bears the name of the ancient Roman tunnels close to the estate.
