The appellation produces red and ros\u00e9 wines. Recognized as an Appellation d&#8217;Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e since 1937, the Bourgueil vineyard produces 70000 hectolitres a year, 4% of which are ros\u00e9s.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>The Bourgueil vineyards have monastic origins<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The beginnings <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twil.fr\/france\/vallee-de-la-loire\/bourgueil.html\">Bourgueillois vineyard <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are probably associated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presence <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bourgueil Abbey <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founded<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  in 990. In 1189, Abbot Baudry  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">praises the beauty <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of its monastery and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wine-growing region<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Visit  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">course<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centuries, the vineyards expanded beyond the walls <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the abbey <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spread out <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hillsides and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ancient terraces <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Loire. Enjoying his  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">location<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> edge <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Loire, the vineyards <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[passage supprim\u00e9] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de Bourgueil  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for several centuries<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first step in the export process<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  of fine wines, notably to the Flemish countries from the 17th century onwards, thanks to maritime trade.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the artists and writers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabelais, Pierre de Ronsard, Balzac  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or even  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actor Jean Carmet sang the praises of Bourgueil wines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The soils of AOC Bourgueil are composed of gravel and tuffeau.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1400-hectare vineyard covers a high alluvial terrace <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  on the right bank of the Loire. The viticultural terroir benefits from a temperate, oceanic-influenced climate. Temperature and precipitation levels match those of Angers and Tours,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located in the middle <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these two towns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vineyard soils <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stretch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on three levels: islands of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of pebbles emerging<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the most recent alluvial deposits, a high terrace <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of sand and rubble <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from ancient alluvium and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> limestone ribs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coasts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  to the forest. Two  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groups<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of soils <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shape the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">name. On the one hand, the low terrace of gravel, sand and clay, a few centimetres to several metres deep, allows water to drain quickly and the soil to warm up quickly, producing supple, delicate, round and fruity wines. On the other hand, the hillsides are made up of Turonian tuff, a clay-limestone rock that is ideal for growing vines. Tuffeau, known locally as &#8220;la tuf&#8221;, is the rock used to build houses and ch\u00e2teaux, as well as the cellars now used to preserve the fine bottles of Bourgueil.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Bourgueil is a wine with light, fruity notes.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wines of Bourgueil <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are produced using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Cabernet Franc grape variety, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">locally known as &#8220;Breton<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;Breton&#8221;, which may be complemented by Cabernet-Sauvignon <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without exceeding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% of the final blend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When young, the red wine of Bourgueil <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distinguishes itself by its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sparkling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cherry color, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garnet or purple<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it ages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflections <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of amber color<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  appear. The ros\u00e9  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is characterized <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pink <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep pink <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deep pink<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the nose, Bourgueil red is a wine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a strong <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aromatic. Notes of cherry, morello cherry, strawberry or blackcurrant are first detectable, followed by raspberry aromas.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wine can also evoke<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> licorice or green bell pepper. <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[passage supprim\u00e9]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After a few years<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the aromas of fresh red fruit evolve towards <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notes of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cooked fruit <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or even<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spices. At the end of the guard,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bourgueil expresses animal scents <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal scents <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leather or fur, combined with woody <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">woody reminders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mature wines release gamey notes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Ros\u00e9 wines <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">express a diversity of fresh fruits<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the palate, gravel wines are supple, light and fruity, with a hint of acidity at the end, reminiscent of the Loire Valley. Their tannic structure is often very present but melted. Tuffeau wines  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are tannic, with a texture that is both complex and fleshy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reach full maturity <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after a few years in the cellar, and are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are capable of ageing for more than 15 years, just like the great vintages of the appellation.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can then  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unveil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tips<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[passage supprim\u00e9] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slightly smoky or spicy. Ros\u00e9s are  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">structured and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bring freshness <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the palate. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lack <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amplitude <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of red wines, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but are perfect accompaniments to summer meals. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">summer meals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red wines made from gravel can be kept for 2 to 5 years, while red wines made from tuffeau can be kept for 3 to 10 years. Ros\u00e9 wines can be kept from 1 to 4 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Bourgueil goes well with a variety of meats and cheeses<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bourgueil red wine goes perfectly with charcuterie, white meat, cheeses such as Saint-Maure and red fruit salad. Red wines <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from gravel are particularly well suited to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white meats <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">white meats or <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheeses and are best served at around 16\u00b0C. Ros\u00e9 wines are ideal for charcuterie and grilled meats, and should be enjoyed at around 10\u00b0C.  <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Exceptional vintages in the Bourgueil appellation<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best vintages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bourgueil appellation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">correspond to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1928, 1929, 1945, 1947,1949, 1953, 1955, 1959, 1978, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996 and 2005<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In particular, the 1929 vintage stood out as an exceptional vintage, the 1945 and 1947 vintages as vintages of the century, and the 1959 and 1989 vintages as vintages of the millennium.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The red wines known as exceptional vintages correspond to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">years <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1929, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1955, 1959, 1971, 1985, 1989, 1995, 1996 and 2005,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and for ros\u00e9s, the years 1928, 1929, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1955, 1959, 1961, 1978, 1985, 1989, 1990, 1995 and 2001.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2 Bourgueil estates to discover<\/h2>\n<h3>Domaine des Ouches<\/h3>\n<p>The 17-hectare Domaine des Ouches is an eight-generation family estate, now run by brothers Thomas and Denis Gambier. They produce several types of red wine from their different terroirs. They also offer a ros\u00e9 wine that reveals other characteristics of Cabernet Franc. The wine is aged in tuns, vats, barrels or terracotta jars.<\/p>\n<h3>Domaine des Vallettes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Domaine des Vallettes is a 26-hectare family estate run by the Jamet brothers,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winegrowers who come from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight generations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twil.fr\/producteurs\/france\/vallee-de-la-loire\/bourgueil.html\">winegrowers in Bourgueil.<\/a><\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The two <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">categories<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soils<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specific to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">edges of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loire banks <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be observed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the Domaine : <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gravel and sand at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anjou, clay-limestone <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  Bourgueil hillsides.
