Recognized as an Appellation d&#8217;Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e since 1994, the vineyard produces red and ros\u00e9 wines. Annual production is 11,000 hectoliters, of which 15% are ros\u00e9s.<\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>C\u00f4te-Roannaise, from table wine to label wine<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vineyard <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Gallo-Roman heritage <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the first text mentioning it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dates back to 970 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">present-day commune <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Villerest. In the Middle Ages, the vineyard expanded under the impetus of the Benedictines of Ambierle and the Counts of Forez. The wine trade developed particularly in the 17th and 18th centuries, thanks to improved river transport via the Loire.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to serve the cities of Nantes and Paris<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The vineyard declined in the 19th and 20th centuries due to the phylloxera crisis, competition from wines from the south of France and the rural exodus.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The awarding of the VDQS label in 1955 marked the beginning of a shift towards the production of quality wines. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">although the majority <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">production remains <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recognized<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  in table wine. The turning point came in the 1980s when  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more and more winegrowers<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are turning <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to quality and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the vineyard to obtain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1994 the <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AOC. The quantity of labelled wine  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 5,000 to 10,000 hectolitres <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the 1990s to the 2000s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The AOC C\u00f4te-Roannaise terroir lies on a mild granite soil.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 215-hectare vineyard is located to the west of the  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commune<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  de Roanne, au  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lower mountains  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de la Madeleine, heart of the Massif Central.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 communes in the region have AOC soils<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  five of which (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saint-Haon-le-Vieux, Saint-Andr\u00e9-d&#8217;Apchon, Renaison, Ambierle and Villemontais<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) concentrating  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">near  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">90% of  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hectares planted<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vines, planted between 350 and 550 meters above sea level, face east and benefit from a temperate oceanic climate with a mountain influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The soils, which are very sandy and draining, are composed of granitic arenas. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ensemble overlooking the upper <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the vineyard <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ancient soils. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volcanic tuffeau can be found to the south of the vineyard, microgranites in the center, and granites to the north of the terroir.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The lower part of the vineyard is composed of feldspathic sands.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dating back to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oligocene period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some growers also cultivate grape varieties for the production of white wines such as Chardonnay and Viognier, which are classified as Vins de Pays d&#8217;Urf\u00e9. Sparkling and sweet wines are also produced and recognized as vins de pays.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>AOC C\u00f4te-Roannaise highlights the originality of its terroir<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamay noir is the region&#8217;s main grape variety<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">known locally as &#8220;Saint-Romain&#8221;.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It contributes to an average annual production of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 9,500 hectolitres of red wine and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1,500 hectolitres of ros\u00e9. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamay noir is the only grape variety <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used to make AOC red and ros\u00e9 wines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reds <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stand out for their elegant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elegant, lively red <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with violet highlights <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">violet<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reminiscent of ruby<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The vintages of  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old vines <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">present <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shades<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">darker and denser<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ros\u00e9 wines have a pink <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">salmon-pink color <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bright and limpid.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the nose,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the red ones  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exude a  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a multitude of fragrances  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fruity notes such as  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blackcurrant, raspberry, cherry, blackberry or wild strawberry, enhanced with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accents<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evoking spices or liquorice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ros\u00e9 wines  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are reminiscent of cherry or blackcurrant and can  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  notes of exotic fruit  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to aromas of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  local fruits such as  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pear or apple<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the palace,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">red wines  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mingle  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">softness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmony<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  and  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fruity flavor  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with silky tannins.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The age of the vines, the date of harvest and the length of the vatting period all play a role.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  two  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">categories  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of wines, on the one hand<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  sweet  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and fruity, on the other hand, cuv\u00e9es  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spicier<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sometimes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  minerals, including  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the finely rustic character brings out the singularity  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winegrowing. Ros\u00e9 wines  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sparkling <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and fruity, bringing freshness and vivacity to the palate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red wines can be kept for 1 to 3 years, while ros\u00e9 wines are best drunk young.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>A C\u00f4te-Roannaise is the ideal companion for aperitifs and charcuterie.<\/h2>\n<p>Red wines go well with charcuterie, white meats and cheeses such as Fourme de Montbrison. Ros\u00e9s are ideal with aperitifs, charcuterie and grilled meats. Tasting temperature is 14\u00b0C for red wines and between 8 and 10\u00b0C for ros\u00e9s.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Outstanding vintages in the C\u00f4te-Roannaise appellation<\/h2>\n<p>The C\u00f4te-Roannaise red stands out as an exceptional vintage for 2005. 1995, 2001 and 2002 were all excellent vintages, and 2000 was a great vintage.<\/p>\n<p>The C\u00f4te-Roannaise ros\u00e9 boasts the excellent vintages of 1995 and 2002. The great vintages are 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2005.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>C\u00f4te-Roannaise Domaines perpetuate the family winemaking tradition<\/h2>\n<h3>Domaine des Pothiers<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Located in the southern part of the appellation in the commune of Villemontais,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Domaine consists of 21 hectares of vines. A descendant of several generations of winegrowers in the Pothier family, Romain Paire took over the estate in 2005, modernizing it with new methods of vatting and converting to organic and biodynamic viticulture. The grape varieties grown are Gamay Saint-Romain and Pinot Gris, aged in concrete vats, wooden truncated-cone vats, barrels or foudres.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Domaine Vial<\/h3>\n<p>Philippe and Jean-Marie Vial come from generations of winegrowing families, and took over the family estate some twenty years ago, restructuring and modernizing the business. After several extensions to the estate, the two brothers now cultivate 10 hectares of vines, including 9 hectares of Gamay and 1 hectare of Chardonnay and Viognier white varieties. In particular, they own the Bouth\u00e9ran hillside, one of the appellation&#8217;s most renowned parcels, thanks to its exceptional exposure and terroir.
