Colonized by the Roman Empire, the commune of Gigondas is thought to have been home to vines exported by the Romans since Antiquity, but the oldest evidence of their existence dates back to 1120, when the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bishop of Vaison<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gave a mense to his cathedral church, which included a vineyard in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gigondas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From the 18th century onwards, Gigondas production declined as the population abandoned the area, until the Raspail family, notably Eug\u00e8ne, revived production by settling there in the second half of the 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the 20th century, wines from this terroir were rapidly classified as C\u00f4tes-du-Rh\u00f4ne Villages, and in 1971 were awarded the Appellation d&#8217;Origine Contr\u00f4l\u00e9e (the first village appellation in the C\u00f4tes-du-Rh\u00f4ne to be so entitled).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is a Gigondas made?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/gigondas\/\">Gigondas wines<\/a> are mainly produced as reds or ros\u00e9s.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the reds, there are three main grape varieties: Grenache (maximum 50%), Syrah and Mourv\u00e8dre (minimum 15% each). The remaining AOC C\u00f4tes du Rh\u00f4ne grape varieties are authorized up to a maximum of 10%, with the exception of Carignan.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For ros\u00e9, we also find Grenache limited to 50%, along with all the other AOC C\u00f4tes du Rh\u00f4ne grape varieties, each limited to a maximum of 10% (Carignan still excluded).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you recognize a Gigondas and what flavors does it have?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.twil.fr\/france\/vallee-du-rhone\/gigondas.html\">Gigondas red<\/a> wines generally have a deep, shimmering ruby to dark garnet color. On the nose, a powerful, evolving bouquet is easily recognized, moving from very ripe red or black fruit to undergrowth or wild mint. On the palate, Gigondas is full-bodied and fleshy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ros\u00e9 wines are characterized by a deep, sunny color and aromas of compound fruit or almonds.
