In 2017, 341,000 hectares of vines were planted worldwide, representing 5% of the world&#8217;s total. China has become the world&#8217;s leading producer, with 60,000 hectares planted, compared with 48,000 hectares in France. For the record, it&#8217;s Chile&#8217;s first grape variety. In Bordeaux, it is grown mainly in the M\u00e9doc and Graves regions and is known for producing high-quality wines.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second most cultivated grape variety in the world is <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/merlot\/\">Merlot<\/a> <\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a total of 266,000 hectares planted. It&#8217;s France&#8217;s leading grape variety, with 112,000 hectares cultivated in the Bordeaux and South-West regions. Blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, it adds roundness to the wines.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In third place comes <\/span><b>Trempranillo Noir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  of Spanish origin, covering an area of 231,000 hectares. Nearly 90% of this area is in Spain, and this grape variety is particularly well known for producing great wines in the Rioja and Valdepenas regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth most planted grape variety in the world is a white variety: the<\/span><b>Airen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also of Spanish origin. This hardy variety is used in Spanish brandy distilleries and accounts for almost 30% of Spanish vineyards. Planted on 218,000 hectares worldwide, it is losing ground over the years.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/chardonnay\/\"><br \/>\n  <b>Chardonnay <\/b><br \/>\n<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the fifth most planted grape variety in the world, with 210,000 hectares of vines. France is the leading producer, closely followed by the United States. It&#8217;s an easy-to-grow variety that thrives in all climates, which is why it can be found in all 4 corners of the world.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With 190,000 hectares planted worldwide, the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/syrah\/\">Syrah<\/a> <\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the sixth most common grape variety. Of French origin, it thrives in warm, temperate climates and produces full-bodied wines with fruity, spicy aromas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seventh most planted grape variety: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/grenache\/\"><br \/>\n  <b>Grenache Noir<\/b><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  with 163,000 hectares. Of Spanish origin, it prefers warm, dry climates and is found in France (Languedoc, Rh\u00f4ne Valley, Provence), Spain, Italy, California, Argentina, South Africa and Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/sauvignon\/\"><br \/>\n  <b>Sauvignon Blanc<\/b><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the eighth most planted grape variety in the world, with 123,000 hectares.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is grown in France in the Bordeaux and Loire Valley regions, as well as in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite its capricious nature <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/pinot-noir\/\"><br \/>\n  <b>Pinot noir<\/b><br \/>\n<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  is the ninth most planted grape variety, with 112,000 hectares of vines worldwide. It requires a cool or temperate climate. The jewel in Burgundy&#8217;s crown<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wine is light and fruity, and is often drunk young. It is also very popular in the United States, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the tenth most planted grape variety is of Italian origin: it is the <\/span><b>Trebbiano Toscano<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also known as Ugni Blanc.
