More than just experimentation, garage wine is also the subject of a veritable viticultural movement.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A movement launched in Bordeaux<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cradle of France&#8217;s great wines, the Bordeaux region saw the birth of the garage wine movement <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the early 1990s, particularly in <a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/saint-emilion\/\">Saint-Emilion<\/a>. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim for the winegrowers was to produce extremely high quality wines in very small quantities and on very small areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he fact that the production of this type of wine could fit into a garage, or took place in a garage, is the origin of the nickname.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noted, rated and praised by Robert Parker, these wines quickly gained immense notoriety and demand.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They were particularly prized because they<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">able to compete with the great classified growths of Bordeaux.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Bordeaux, great wines generally come from the cellars of ch\u00e2teaux with well-established reputations and inexhaustible resources.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The micro-domaines therefore wanted to create exceptional wines in highly limited production, using their own resources and focusing on extremely precise vinification.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  In the vineyards and in the cellar, the work was particularly meticulous.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Great care is taken with pruning and leaf removal. The grapes are hand-picked from the best plots and meticulously sorted several times to ensure that only perfectly ripe, healthy grapes are used for accurate, rigorous vinification.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The first garage wines<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legendary wine from <strong>Ch\u00e2teau Le Pin<\/strong> in Pomerol is considered the original garage wine. Winemaker Jacques Thienpont,  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said to be the pioneer of great garage wines, created this confidential micro-cuv\u00e9e in 1979. It counts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  among the most expensive and sought-after in Bordeaux.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The driving force behind the movement is <strong>Jean-Luc Thunevin<\/strong> in Saint-Emilion. In the early 1990s, he created the cuv\u00e9e Ch\u00e2teau Valandraud. He tells Sommeliers International magazine: &#8220;<\/span><i><br \/>\n  <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We simply applied the methods of the great ch\u00e2teaux to the 1.20 hectares&#8221;. <\/span><br \/>\n<\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expression &#8220;garage wine&#8221; was first used by Florence Cathiard of Ch\u00e2teau Smith Haut Lafitte when she visited the estate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movement gained momentum, and the price of garage wines even surpassed those of Saint-Emilion Grands Crus Class\u00e9s such as Cheval Blanc and P\u00e9trus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the &#8220;original&#8221; garage wines are<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ch\u00e2teaux Le Tertre Roteboeuf, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gracia, Ch\u00e2teau,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rol-Valentin in Saint-\u00c9milion, Ch\u00e2teau <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ch\u00e2teau Marojallia in Margaux<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and many others&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What about today?<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veritable revolution has taken place in Bordeaux: the most eminent vineyards, as well as emerging ones, have drawn inspiration from garage wines to create their cuv\u00e9es.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, it would seem that only the best garage wines remain in Bordeaux, most of which have achieved the rank of Premier Grand Cru class\u00e9 de Saint Emilion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By extension, the expression vin de garage is now often applied to exceptional micro-cuv\u00e9es produced in limited quantities by winemakers, as garages have now given way to cellars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he <strong>Ch\u00e2teau Croix de Labrie<\/strong> and <strong>Clos du Canton des Ormeaux<\/strong> vintages in Saint Emilion are particularly noteworthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vin-champagne.ouest-france.fr\/le-chateau-croix-de-labrie\/\">Ch\u00e2teau Croix de Labrie<\/a> extends over less than 6 hectares of organically and biodynamically farmed vines. Axelle and Pierre Courduri\u00e9 took over the estate in 2013. Axelle, the ch\u00e2teau&#8217;s winemaker, pays close attention to detail: green work in the vines, precise, parcel-based vinification and very limited yields.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"best_offers_js\" data-cepage=\"\" data-magentoid=\"16164\" data-title=\"Ch\u00e2teau Croix de Labrie\" data-type=\"producer\" data-limit=\"2\" data-id=\"13951\" data-display=\"horizontal\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avec ses 27 ares, le Clos du Canton des Ormeaux est le plus petit cru de Pomerol.
